Are You Accidentally Sabotaging Your Diet?

By Tarah Smith

We all realize that the most effective foods for our diet plans are lean meats, whole grains and healthy fats. These would be the foods that give us protein along with energy. They keep our bodies healthy nutritionally but don't stuff us full of empty calories which will later need to be burned off at the gym. Did you already know, though, that a few of the foods you are eating that are supposed to be perfectly acceptable by dietary standards, could be keeping you from losing weight at a good pace? They could possibly be even adding fat laden calories to your body! Here are some of the foods that may be undermining your diet efforts.

Sports Drinks tend not to really help you. You've probably been thinking that the sports drink is the proper way to help your whole body feel better after a workout. Most doctors will tell you, though, that if your exercise routine does not go over ninety minutes then you should be fine just by drinking water. Sports drinks are loaded with sugar and calories and a lot of other things you don't need such as artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Try having some chocolate milk instead. The sugars inside the chocolate will help your muscles start to mend and the calcium in milk keeps your bones strong.

Protein Shakes are not your friend. Lots of folks think that drinking a protein shake is a good way to curb cravings between meals. When you're eating an otherwise healthy diet, however, a protein shake merely sends you into protein overdose. No matter what others think, protein is not kept in the muscles, it is stored in your body as fat. If you've already had your daily allotment of protein that day, your body will just save the extra in your fat cells for later and that won't enable you to drop pounds or inches.

Pre-packaged deli meat is not nearly as good for you as you might believe it is. You may think that a sandwich made of whole wheat bread and pre-packaged lean deli meat makes for a good lunch. The simple fact is that pre-packaged deli meat is crammed full of preservatives and also about a third of your advised daily sodium intake. This can be especially bothersome if you are prone to heart disease. Rather than buying pre-packaged deli meat, pick some home cooked chicken or the deli meat that is newly sliced at your deli counter. Sure they are a lot more expensive options but they are quite a lot healthier for you.

There are all sorts of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, for example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your physician what the best ways for you to eat healthfully are and then follow those directions. If you are cautious about what you take in and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
