By Deb Taylor

Many people don't realize just how important fitness is to their life. Fitness is more than just losing weight; it's committing to being the healthiest and happiest you that you can be. Here are some great ways to get fit and to propel you toward optimum levels of personal fitness.

Don't be afraid to ask for help at the gym. If you don't know how to use a machine, go ahead and ask. Understanding how to utilize both the aerobic and strength building machines will give you the confidence to actually use them. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to keep up your workouts.

Increase the effectiveness of your walking workout. Bend your elbows at a 90 degree angle and pump your arms with every step you take. This encourages you to walk faster, increases your heart rate, and can burn 15% more calories than if you keep your arms by your side. Try to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, and you will see the results in no time.

There will be days when you have zero motivation to workout. On days like this, commit to doing just ten minutes of exercise. If you get started, chances are you will continue exercising past the first ten minutes. Even if you don't continue exercising, ten minutes is better than no minutes.

You should keep track of all of the calories you're consuming on a daily basis. It's one thing to work out to get into shape, but monitoring your diet also takes a toll in how fast you get fit. You have to work hard at getting into shape by exercising both your body and regulating your eating habits.

Although wearing a weight belt is ideal during overhead presses, squats, and other maximal lifts, it should not be worn all the time. By training regularly while wearing the weight belt, you might actually decrease the effectiveness and tone of your abdominal and lower back muscles, therefore sacrificing your hard-earned muscular strength.

Strengthen your back to help end back pain. Every time you do a set of exercises that focus on your abdominal exercises, do a set of exercises that focus on your lower back. Working out only your abdominal muscles can cause poor posture and pain in the lower back.

While indoor treadmills provide great exercise, running in the outdoors is far more strenuous. Treadmills offer convenience, especially when it gets too cold outside. Running on the sidewalk, however, is more effective.

When you are concentrating your fitness goals onto your abs, remember they need to rest. You will not do them any favors with daily workouts. You should limit your ab training to three days a week. You should never do more than four days of ab training in a week.

To increase your running speed, you should try to increase your running stride speed. Do not try to increase the strides length. When running, your foot should always touch under your body, not in front of you. For propulsion, be sure to push off using the toes on your rear leg.

Chin ups can be a great way to build upper body strength. A good way to do this exercise is to imagine yourself pulling your elbows down instead of you thinking about pulling yourself up. This will make the exercise seem easier and you will be able to do more.

As you age, your muscles become less flexible and you will, therefore, need to hold your stretches longer before exercising. If you are 40 or younger, hold each stretch for about 30 seconds. If you are older than 40, you will want to stretch for at least 60 seconds to loosen your muscles.

Getting fit takes some time; it doesn't happen overnight. But working out a fitness routine and committing to your own success can help. Use these tips to help you do that and decide to work on your fitness no matter what. Be healthy by being fit and be happier as well.
