Dentists and Dermal Filler Procedures

By Cleah Sphan

Dermal fillers have now become part and parcel of cosmetic surgery across many parts of the world. However, guidance dictates that these procedures be performed by healthcare professionals that are trained in this procedure. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons were the only professionals who have traditionally been allowed to administer these treatments until recent changes. For certain kinds of conditions, dentists in some states in America have been certified to administer dermal fillers on patients.

In this article we shall take a look at the role of dentists in administering dermal fillers to patients.

Some brief information on dermal fillers.

A natural component in human skin is hyaluronic acid, and this is what dermal fillers are mainly comprised of. Wrinkles and lines are formed in our faces as we get older because there is less hyaluronic acid in the skin. Skin can look much more youthful and refreshed after wrinkles and lines are reduced using dermal fillers. They are also helpful in plumping up the lips as well.

Dentists and dermal fillers

The debate about dermal fillers being administered by dentists is ongoing at this time. The argument against them doing so discusses their insufficient knowledge of the facial anatomy given that their training is primarily concerning the oral cavity. If you were to ask a dentist you would get a different answer, as during their training an intensive knowledge in the musculature of the face is needed as they relate to dentistry procedures.

Dentists in California have now been approved by their dental board for prescribing and administering dermal fillers. The certification has been applauded by dentists, as they firmly believe in their qualifications to deliver these dermal filler treatments. However, there are limitations to what it can be used for with the board clearly stating that dermal fillers can be used by dentists as long as it is used for dental therapeutic purposes. Before being certified, the essential training in the process must be undertaken.

The guidelines vary between states. For example, the Georgia Dental Association allows dentists to inject dermal fillers for dental purposes only after they have undergone a 21 hour training program.

Limitations involved

At this time, it looks like a lot of dental boards in states in America are now allowing dentists to administer dermal filler injections when it is in relation to a therapeutic dental procedure. Cosmetic injection or other reasons of using dermal fillers not related to dentistry are not permitted, and there are serious legal issues surrounding it. Dentists are obligated to look at the rules in their own state and the board governing it, to find out if they are eligible to get the necessary training needed to deliver these treatments.

Synopsis

With each passing year, the advancements in dentistry accumulate, and this goes for cosmetic surgery as well. The injection of dermal fillers is permitted nowadays for issues that are involved directly in dentistry, but for cosmetic reasons, dentists are extremely limited in what they are allowed to do. Dental boards may in fact allow dentists in time to treat patients using dermal filler injections for cosmetic reasons, but dentists must refer to the stipulations set up by the boards in their state of origin at this time for guidance on this.
