How To Perform Stallone's Rocky Abs Workout In Your Local Gym

By Russ Howe

Developing a lean six pack is always among the top priorities for exercise enthusiasts of all levels of physical ability. Today you'll see the Sylvester Stallone abs workout in full, detailing the exact routine Rocky himself used to get into the best shape of his movie career.

While exercise routines are often over complicated with current fads and trends, one aspect of Stallone's training routine which stands out is that everything is kept simple. Each move featured in the routine is a basic, proven bodybuilding exercise which has been used for decades.

Exercise 1: Floor Crunches.

3 sets of 15 are required. Almost everybody who has used a gym has, at some stage, used crunches as part of their abdominal routine. This move really zones in on the upper part of the six pack, helping to bring out the top two very nicely indeed.

Move 2: Side Crunches.

Aim for 2 x 30 on each side. Side crunches concentrate on developing the muscles which run down the side of the six pack, which are called the obliques. This move is excellent for bringing out the definition in these small muscles.

Move 3: Knee Raises.

2 sets of 10 reps. This is a tough move because it's one of those exercises which most people perform incorrectly. You need to focus on bringing the knees up beyond a 90 degree angle, something which many people neglect. This ensures that the strain is placed on the lower torso rather than the hip flexor muscles.

Exercise 4: Broomstick Twists.

Aim for 3 x 10 on each side. An often overlooked exercise, this can be done with either a barbell or a mop. Twist to each side while focusing on contracting the oblique muscles and you'll notice the incredibly burn this relatively straightforward exercise is able to provide.

Exercise 5: Ab Wheel Roll-Outs.

Aim for just 1 set containing up to 30 reps. While each of the previous moves have concentrated on an individual part of your midsection, this one focuses on the entire area. It's always good to end a tough workout with a full body move working the entire scope of the muscles you covered in your workout, so this is a great choice to finish any core workout.

As with all exercise routines, of course, you should look to scale this down to suit your individual capabilities. It would be silly to presume that everybody would be able to jump straight into this high intensity core session and get great results. The Sylvester Stallone abs workout is a tough test for even the fittest of fitness enthusiasts.
